Sobibor, Extermination Camp
As we approached Sobibor the train tracks peeked out at us from amidst the trees. A huge sign greeted us when we arrived and explained what happened here. Sobibor was a death camp part of Operation Reinhard along with Treblinka, which was part of the Nazi Final Solution plan. Similar to Treblinka, the all evidence of the camp was destroyed. It was in this camp that a major revolt by the prisoners occurred. As we marched down the forest path, stones line the way, each with the name of a victim. There were thousands of stones. We arrived a the main monument, a giant circular basin filled with ashes. There we were told of the bravery of those who rebelled. They wanted to escape so they could tell their stories and the story of the camp. If it weren't for these brave Jews, we wouldn't even know of Sobibor and the atrocities that occurred there.
